The Punisher has arrived in movie theatres in an all new film! Released on April 16th, 2004, the new movie, from Artisan Pictures and Marvel Studios, started shooting last July in Tampa, Florida and stars Thomas Jane (Boogie Nights, Deep Blue Sea) in the title role, with John Travolta (Face/Off, Pulp Fiction) as the main villain, Howard Saint.

The movie is directed by renowned screenwriter Jonathan Hensleigh (Armageddon, Die Hard With A Vengeance) and co-produced by Marvel’s Avi Arad (Spider-Man, The Hulk) and Gale Anne Hurd (The Terminator, Aliens).

The character and background of The Punisher has been slightly altered for the new release, with plot details as follows...

The Punisher tells the story of FBI undercover agent, Frank Castle, who until now has beaten considerable odds. A former Special Forces operative, he is finally moving out of the field and into a desk job and a normal life with his wife and son. Then Castle’s world is shaken to its core by a nightmare he has longed feared: his family is executed as a repercussion from his final undercover assignment. With unparalleled intensity, ferocious intelligence and fearless actions, Castle seeks to punish the murderers and finds the one thing he least expected: redemption.

For all you UK based Punisher fans, you’ll have to wait a little while longer to see the movie at cinemas, with the movie not scheduled for release over here until September or so - the Region 1 DVD may well be out before then, so try and order it before you visit your local cinema!

Laura Harring and Rebecca Romijn-Stamos are also in the cast of the new movie. "Mulholland Drive" star Laura Harring plays the ruthless, vengeful wife of the film's evil Howard Saint (John Travolta). "X2: X-Men United" star Rebecca Romijn-Stamos plays Joan the Mouse, the Punisher's neighbour who lives by herself and is unaware of his alter ego. A classy and reserved woman, Joan has had her own share of hardship and feels safe and comfortable being around the man who lives next door.

In addition to two beautiful women joining the cast, we've got news that Thomas Jane trained with four Navy SEALs and worked out twice a day for the film. About the realistic fight scenes, Thomas Jane said, "all old-school stuff. What would you really do to take these guys out? What it usually comes down to is, you poke their eyes out, you slit their throat, break their nose, brutal stuff that ends the fight kind of quickly. That's why you don't see it too much. No wires, no “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” stuff. It's all going to be real world." Wow!
